Shutter Speed

This will most likely be boring to a lot of people; if so, scroll down to the previous post. It's still fresh enough that probably not many have seen it since hardly no one comes here anyway.

In order for me to become better at this photography stuff, I need to really learn all the mechanics to it when shooting in Manual Mode. I like manual mode, it allows me to be creative. It isn't easiest and for quick pictures I shoot in AP mode. If I really want to enjoy the moment and not have to worry about it shoot in Auto. GASP! I know, I would be looked down upon by so many photographers. I don't care, I don't always want to miss a moment with my children because I was fiddling around with my settings.

Anyway, I get shutter speed, ISO, aperture and how they all work together (which took me FOREVER). What I am NOT familiar with yet, is what shutter speed to use and in what lighting and what to adapt it to once aperture is adjusted. Lost yet? I was about a year and a half ago.

I have a general idea but I want to be quicker, more precise with better exposure SOOC (straight out of camera) without relying on photoshop to be my crutch. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. So I am working with all sorts of lighting to obtain a more accurate knowledge. Here is a feeble attempt to photograph a night setting that captures elements as they are in that given lighting. What I was concentrating on was the street light lit up with a bit of sunset just over the horizon surrounding by a falling night sky. I think I got what I was going for, no? Granted, my subdivision isn't the most beautiful and awe inspiring environment to photograph but I couldn't really travel with two children in bed and Jon out for the evening. I don't know, I thought it was a pretty decent picture. It wasn't that great of a sunset tonight anyway and the trees were blocking a lot of that. I work with what Mother Nature gives me.

For those interested:
SOOC, 35mm, ISO: 100, 1/160, F1.8
